Reflections on George

By Matt Wallden

It is not too often that a singer-songwriter-producer of the iconic status of George Michael comes around. Like other greats, he was blessed with multiple talents and had the drive to deliver on them, sufficient to inspire multitudes. He was a poet, a philosopher, and like many true artists had an uncanny knack to surf on the leading edge of the zeitgeist; watching it unfold in his wake as it became mainstream. His political activism around Iraq was seen as misplaced at the time, but now anyone who knows how to operate Google can see his concerns around WMD’s were on the money. Not least of his talents, was the voice of an angel… As Rob Lowe tweeted, now he can sing for them

Growing up in the 80’s, my experience of George Michael was that he was that good looking dude with a wicked voice and some catchy tunes; not anyone I was particularly focused on, just part of the mêlée that was the world of pop.

As I progressed into my teens and began to learn that, not only did George Michael have a great voice, but he wrote all his music – and arranged it – and produced it – and, as it turns out, played almost all the instruments, now I began to really respect the guy.

On top of that – and this is the key point – he was writing about things I could relate to in my own life – and sung them with a passion I felt deeply in my being. An expression which left an impression.

It turns out, it wasn’t just me who liked him… there were others too – roughly 100 million – who liked him enough to buy his records, and when I had the fortune to go to his Concert of Hope to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust, I saw that there were thousands of young men there with their girlfriends – many with his trademark designer stubble who, like me, were inspired by this icon – people who resonated with him, and wanted to be more like him. With lyrics like this…

“If you are the desert, I’ll be the sea,
if you ever hunger, hunger for me,
whatever you ask for, that’s what I’ll be“
(From Father Figure, Faith Album, 1987)

… it’s not surprising that a generation of young men sung his lyrics to their girlfriends, or picturing a girl in mind who they could fall in love with… I recall sending these lyrics to my first true love who I took to the Concert of Hope.

Around the time of this song, George Michael was in the upper echelons of international stardom with multiple awards, critical acclaim and a Grammie to his name – and out-selling both Madonna and Michael Jackson…

In 1992, his status as one of the world’s best live singers was confirmed when his performance eclipsed in quality a line-up of the world’s greatest living pop stars at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert; a performance that resulted in headlines suggesting that he may team up with Queen to become their new front man; something that never transpired.

His lesser known (and deliberately hidden) persona as a philanthropist was perhaps given away in his lyrics, such as those from “One More Try –

“I’ve had enough of danger, and people on the streets, I’m looking out for angels, just trying to find some peace”…

or his lead track from Listen Without Prejudice, Praying For Time,

“This is the year of the hungry man, whose place is in the past – hand in hand, with ignorance and legitimate excuses.”

Then, finally, it happened. In 1997, George was outed. Was this a shock? Yes and no – there had been rumours for some time. People within the industry had called for George Michael to out himself – the openly gay Boy George being one of his better known critics on this front. The way this happened was characteristically transmuted from humiliation into a humorous number 1 hit song.

Across his entire career though, what struck me the most, was that this man, a man who I had idolised to some degree, whose voice I loved, whose music and other talents had inspired me so deeply, was a gay man… And, I recognised that we shared entirely common ground. He was someone who experienced exactly the same feelings as me about those he loved; whose feelings I sung as my own – even sent romantically as a token of my love. And what’s more (once again) it wasn’t just me who resonated in this way, it was millions of young heterosexual men around the planet.

If Ken Wilber is correct, the consciousness of people on the planet is in a steady historical growth, moving from more traditional, mythical ethnocentric views (the realm of religion), where homosexuality is often denounced, toward more rational globalcentric views (the realm of science) that will continue to progress into holistic and integral views of our place in the Kosmos. This view is ultimately inclusive and transcendent.

It may well be that George Michael’s greatest accomplishment, the most profound legacy he’s left us with, was to create a seismic shift in awareness of heterosexual men, that their homosexual counterparts aren’t so different, so alien, so “queer” – after all…

(And for those who barf at this notion, for those who do strongly hold to more ethnocentric, dogmatic “us and them” views, this may prove an interesting read…)

After all, if our ground of experience is our emotions, and George’s homosexual emotions are a perfect match for my heterosexual emotions, maybe there isn’t an “us and them”… maybe there is only a we.

I often tell my patients, we’re all here to inspire before we expire; and George Michael is someone who passes that credential with flying colours.

I, for one, will be forever grateful for his influence in my life and the joy, wisdom and insight he offered me – partly as a role model, partly as an inspiration, and partly as a father figure…

A tribute to George Michael, who died yesterday, but will live on in more ways than most, after what turned out to be his very own Last Christmas…

Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. was George’s second solo album. Arranged, produced and almost completely written by George himself, it eloquently confirmed him as a pioneering, agenda-setting artist.

The staggering success of George’s first solo album Faith resulted in him becoming one of the few artists who could shift millions of albums worldwide.  This, of course, was a dream scenario for the label but George had different plans.  Unable and unwilling to be a 24-hour pop star, constantly in the media spotlight, George felt he needed to follow his artistic instincts regarding how his work should be presented. He decided he would not appear on Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s album cover or be available to physically promote the album beyond select interviews, but instead gave the label the David Fincher-directed Freedom! ‘90, which featured five of the most recognizable beauties on the planet, lip-syncing in place of George. This resulted in a difference in opinion between George and the label over how the album was promoted.

A multi-platinum-selling worldwide chart-topper which reached Number 1 in the UK (where it outsold Faith and went 4X platinum), Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 was the sound of a precedent-setting, boundary-pushing global superstar going his own way.

Shortly after the album’s release, George met his great love Anselmo Feleppa. His anger at Anselmo’s tragic early death, together with his frustration over how the US label had marketed his album contributed to his decision to embark on the traumatic court case with Sony. This left him blocked creatively for almost two years, during which time he made a conscious decision to channel all his energy into challenging the standard recording contract and fighting a corner for all artists. George lost the case but gained the personal and artistic freedom he craved.

Twenty-six years on, George and Sony are long reconciled. Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. remains a remarkable, timeless work, from the beautifully judged protest songs Praying For Time and Mother’s Pride, to the intimate Cowboys & Angels, via the autobiographical Freedom! ‘90. This was music George Michael felt truly committed to.

Directed by BAFTA nominee Phillip Smith, Freedom: George Michael (w/t), tells the gripping, dramatic story of the making of Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, the court case which followed and George’s personal struggle and pain as he loses Anselmo. Many have tried and failed, but George succeeded in reuniting the Freedom! ’90 video’s five supermodels. Other contributors include world famous artists such as Stevie Wonder whose They Won’t Go When I Go was Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s only cover; Elton John who describes the album as George’s “masterpiece”; Liam Gallagher who says George has “Lennon in him”; Mary J Blige who reminds us that George “broke all the rules for everybody”; Tony Bennett, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ricky Gervais, French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt and James Corden.  There are contributions from some of the record company executives who were so uncomfortable facing one of their major artists in court and from the case lawyers.

And today George still continues to touch people with his words and music. This year alone has seen an unprecedented amount of film, TV, and game sync licenses using his music.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 sarà anche ristampato in vinile e in digitale.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 is 25 Years Old

On September 3rd 1990, one of the greatest and most loved pop albums, George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, was released.

25 years later Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, still delights and dazzles.

1987’s Faith had transformed George into a global solo superstar. Along the way it sold in excess of 25 million copies, won almost every accolade available and provided four American Number 1 singles.

Three years later, when one of the biggest stars in popular music declared that the follow-up to Faith was imminent, the anticipation was overwhelming. But George also announced to the world that he would not be promoting the album and would not be appearing on its sleeve or in its videos. His label was shocked, the critics were shocked, but his legions of fans were delighted he was making music again.

Freedom ’90 was the third single from the album and its video was a game-changer. Still regarded as one of the greatest and most influential pop videos, it generated a new audience for George and his work. George did not appear in the video himself, although he was on set. Directed by future double Oscar nominee (and Golden Globe and BAFTA winner) David Fincher, it consisted of models Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford lip-synching the lyrics. After constant rotation on MTV, the women became household names and were transformed from models to supermodels overnight.

Displaying the extraordinary bravery which would characterise his entire career, George was determined that the music on Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 should stand alone and rather than feature the artist, the album’s cover was a 1940 photograph of a densely packed Coney Island beach by the legendary Arthur “Weegee” Fellig.

Ever keen to push the boundaries and advance his art, George had followed Faith by making a superb album which featured the chart-topping hit singles Freedom ’90, Praying For Time, Waiting For That Day, Heal The Pain and Cowboys & Angels, alongside an emotion-packed, piano-led version of Stevie Wonder’s They Won’t Go When I Go and much-loved originals Something To Save, Mother’s Pride and Soul FreeListen Without Prejudice Vol.1 is still widely regarded as the very first Britpop album.

George’s self-belief was vindicated: the music did stand on its own and Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 sold millions around the world. It topped the British charts and won a Brit Award for Best Album. It reached Number 1 in the United States and was a worldwide chart-topping hit.

A timeless collection, Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. has been re-discovered by generations of pop fans and George Michael’s music has influenced contemporary pop stars such as Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Adele, Bruno Mars, Sam Smith and Mark Ronson. Today, this gem sparkles brighter than ever.
