Music Week Awards 2018

Catalogue Marketing Campaign Winner: George Michael, Sony Music Commercial Group

Last night (April 26) a sell-out crowd packed out London’s Grosvenor House Hotel for the 2018 Music Week Awards […]

For all the deserved celebrating on the night, two awards culminated in poignant tributes. When Sony Music Commercial Group’s team took home the award for Catalogue Marketing Campaign, head of marketing Joanna Kalli saluted the late George Michael, saying, “This project turned into a celebration of an incredible artist. The biggest honour has to go to George, so thank you George.” Later, Guy Moot from Sony/ATV Music Publishing dedicated their Publisher Of The Year award to the memory of Avicii, saying, “He was one of our great songwriters. A great loss.” Perhaps the biggest rounds of applause on the night belonged to them.

A Christmas message from George’s family (via georgemichael.com)

Hi Everyone,
Can’t believe it is the end of the year, where has it gone…?!
We want to thank you firstly for making Listen Without Predjudice Number One again, we were happy, and sad all at the same time…
He’d have absolutely LOVED it!!
Can’t you just see that beaming smile and hear him say ‘Thank you my Lovelies’?
He was so happy to be giving you MTV Unplugged which he knew you had wanted… he really loved that magical night and it showed didn’t it, in his stunning, joyous performance…
This year has been a series of new and tough challenges for those of us close and loyal to Yog, not least of which was steeling ourselves this month, to hear ‘Last Christmas’ and ‘December Song’ streaming out of shops, cars, and radios, as it has done for decades, knowing he’s no longer here with us, missing him.
This Christmas will be hard without him, but we know that we are not alone in our mourning the anniversary of his loss, and that the sadness of our wider family, and true friends, is shared by many of you.
We are at ‘that age’ and realise that this year many of you will have had difficult losses too.
Yog, who loved Christmas, and always hoped it would snow… would want each of you that admired and loved him, (yes—he knows you did!!) to take a moment, raise a glass, enjoy his music and think of him fondly, making sure to enjoy your time with, and appreciate your family and friends.
As we all know Christmas is not always easy, life isn’t perfect, and families are complicated…
Yog shared his music with all of us, and many of you connected deeply with his words, yet in life, many hold their own important words and feelings inside, as so often they are the hardest to say out loud.
So if you can, in his memory this year, take a moment and a deep breath and say those ‘I Love You’s’ out loud.
We all think there is time, don’t we? – but, just maybe, it’s later than you think…
Have a good Christmas everyone…
and as our darling Yog would say…
“Take Care”

George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 makes UK chart history

MusicWeek.com| By James Hanley

The reissue of the late George Michael’s 1990 Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 album has soared to the top of the UK albums chart.
The classic LP moved 56,088 units to achieve the biggest Week 1 sale for a reissue in UK chart history. The original release also went straight to No.1 in the UK album charts in September 1990 before going on to sell more than eight million copies worldwide.
Michael personally oversaw the remastering of the album which includes his MTV Unplugged set from 1996 and previously unreleased track Fantasy, featuring Nile Rodgers. The album was released following the airing on Channel 4 of the acclaimed film George Michael: Freedom earlier this month.
David Austin, Michael’s manager, long-term collaborator and close friend since childhood, said: “For three years George, myself and his loyal team have worked relentlessly alongside our amazing team at Sony and together we have carefully crafted our beautiful LWP/MTV Unplugged campaign and film Freedom.
“It’s no great secret that George was a perfectionist and it shows, he was over everything from its inception to its finish and it’s a blessing and rare gift to be guided by such genius. That, along with exceptional teamwork and the overwhelming love for George from the public has made everything come together. We are all so incredibly proud to have the No.1 album in the UK.”
Michael was one of the most successful UK artists of all time. Alongside Andrew Ridgeley in Wham! and then as a solo artist, he had record sales of more than 115m.
