In celebration of the album’s reissue, we are also bringing you Freedom: George Michael, a stunning new film, narrated by George. It co-stars Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Mark Ronson, Mary J Blige, Tony Bennett, Liam Gallagher, James Corden, Ricky Gervais, the Freedom! ’90 video supermodels (Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz and Linda Evangelista) and more.
A remastered version of George’s stunning 1996 MTV Unplugged performance will also be available as an album for the very first time as part of the Deluxe box set and 2CD Edition. The concert took place at the Three Mills Island Studios in East London on Friday 11 October, 1996 and featured George playing ten of his finest songs from the Wham!, Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 (Freedom ’90) and Older eras in an intimate setting. Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 will also be reissued on vinyl and digital.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. was George’s second solo album. Arranged, produced and almost completely written by George himself, it eloquently confirmed him as a pioneering, agenda-setting artist.
The staggering success of George’s first solo album Faith resulted in him becoming one of the few artists who could shift millions of albums worldwide. This, of course, was a dream scenario for the label but George had different plans. Unable and unwilling to be a 24-hour pop star, constantly in the media spotlight, George felt he needed to follow his artistic instincts regarding how his work should be presented. He decided he would not appear on Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s album cover or be available to physically promote the album beyond select interviews, but instead gave the label the David Fincher-directed Freedom! ‘90, which featured five of the most recognizable beauties on the planet, lip-syncing in place of George. This resulted in a difference in opinion between George and the label over how the album was promoted.
A multi-platinum-selling worldwide chart-topper which reached Number 1 in the UK (where it outsold Faith and went 4X platinum), Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 was the sound of a precedent-setting, boundary-pushing global superstar going his own way.
Shortly after the album’s release, George met his great love Anselmo Feleppa. His anger at Anselmo’s tragic early death, together with his frustration over how the US label had marketed his album contributed to his decision to embark on the traumatic court case with Sony. This left him blocked creatively for almost two years, during which time he made a conscious decision to channel all his energy into challenging the standard recording contract and fighting a corner for all artists. George lost the case but gained the personal and artistic freedom he craved.
Twenty-six years on, George and Sony are long reconciled. Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. remains a remarkable, timeless work, from the beautifully judged protest songs Praying For Time and Mother’s Pride, to the intimate Cowboys & Angels, via the autobiographical Freedom! ‘90. This was music George Michael felt truly committed to.
Directed by BAFTA nominee Phillip Smith, Freedom: George Michael (w/t), tells the gripping, dramatic story of the making of Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, the court case which followed and George’s personal struggle and pain as he loses Anselmo. Many have tried and failed, but George succeeded in reuniting the Freedom! ’90 video’s five supermodels. Other contributors include world famous artists such as Stevie Wonder whose They Won’t Go When I Go was Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1’s only cover; Elton John who describes the album as George’s “masterpiece”; Liam Gallagher who says George has “Lennon in him”; Mary J Blige who reminds us that George “broke all the rules for everybody”; Tony Bennett, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ricky Gervais, French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt and James Corden. There are contributions from some of the record company executives who were so uncomfortable facing one of their major artists in court and from the case lawyers.
And today George still continues to touch people with his words and music. This year alone has seen an unprecedented amount of film, TV, and game sync licenses using his music.

Il cofanetto Deluxe e l’edizione con doppio CD conterranno anche una versione rimasterizzata della memorabile performance tenuta ad MTV Unplugged nel 1996, che ora per la prima volta viene pubblicata su album.
Per celebrare la riedizione dell’album, Channel 4, BBC Worldwide e Sony Music hanno commissionato la realizzazione di Freedom: George Michael (titolo provvisorio), straordinario film narrato dallo stesso George, che vedrà la partecipazione di Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Mark Ronson, Mary J Blige, Tony Bennett, Liam Gallagher, James Corden, Ricky Gervais, le supermodelle del video di “Freedom! ’90” (Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz e Linda Evangelista) e tanti altri ospiti.
Il film sarà distribuito a livello mondiale da BBC Worldwide. Negli USA andrà in onda su Showtime venerdì 9 dicembre alle ore 21.00.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 è il secondo capitolo della carriera solista di George Michael. Arrangiato, prodotto e scritto quasi totalmente dallo stesso George, l’album lo consacrò come artista innovativo e pieno di personalità.
Grazie al sensazionale successo di Faith, il suo debutto solista, George Michael divenne uno dei pochi artisti in grado di vendere milioni di dischi a livello mondiale. Questo era ovviamente uno scenario ideale per la casa discografica, ma non per George. Per niente capace né disposto a essere una popstar 24 ore su 24, costantemente sotto i riflettori, George avvertì l’esigenza di presentare la sua musica seguendo semplicemente l’istinto. Decise quindi di non apparire sulla copertina di Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 o di partecipare fisicamente alla promozione dell’album al di là di qualche intervista selezionata, e consegnò alla casa discografica il video di “Freedom! ‘90”, diretto da David Fincher, in cui cinque delle più famose modelle del pianeta cantavano il suo brano in playback. Ne seguì una divergenza di opinioni sul modo in cui George e l’etichetta intendevano promuovere il disco.
Conquistando la vetta delle classifiche (nel Regno Unito superò le vendite di Faith e ottenne quattro dischi di platino), Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 era l’espressione di una superstar globale con le idee ben chiare, determinata a lasciare il segno e a superare i propri limiti musicali.
Poco dopo la pubblicazione dell’album, George conobbe Anselmo Feleppa, il suo grande amore. La rabbia per la tragica e prematura morte di Anselmo, unita alla frustrazione per il modo in cui l’etichetta americana aveva promosso l’album, contribuirono alla sua drammatica decisione di intentare una causa contro Sony. Il risultato fu una pausa creativa di quasi due anni, durante i quali l’artista decise di convogliare tutte le sue energie nella contestazione del contratto discografico standard e nella difesa degli interessi di tutti gli artisti. Sebbene perse la causa, George guadagnò la libertà personale e artistica che tanto aveva agognato.
Sono passati ventisei anni da allora, e tra George e Sony è da tempo tornata la pace. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 rimane un disco senza tempo, fatto di brani in cui George Michael ha messo tutto se stesso, dalle splendide canzoni di protesta come Praying For Time e Mother’s Pride all’intima Cowboys & Angels, passando per l’autobiografica Freedom! ‘90.
Diretto da Phillip Smith, regista candidato ai BAFTA, Freedom: George Michael (titolo provvisorio) racconta l’avvincente genesi di Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, la successiva causa legale e il dolore e le difficoltà di George per la perdita di Anselmo. Molti ci avevano provato senza successo, ma George è finalmente riuscito a riunire le cinque supermodelle del video di “Freedom! ‘90”. Il film si arricchisce dei contributi di stelle della musica mondiale come Stevie Wonder, la cui “They Won’t Go When I Go” è l’unica cover contenuta in Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1; Elton John, che descrive l’album come il “capolavoro” di George; Liam Gallagher, secondo il quale George “ha qualcosa che lo accomuna a Lennon”; Mary J Blige, che ci ricorda che George “ha infranto le regole per tutti quanti noi”; Tony Bennett, Mark Ronson, Tracey Emin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ricky Gervais, Emmanuelle Alt (direttrice dell’edizione francese di Vogue) e James Corden. Non mancano le testimonianze di alcuni dirigenti della casa discografica, a disagio nell’affrontare uno dei loro maggiori artisti nelle aule di un tribunale, e degli avvocati che seguirono la causa.
Ancora oggi George continua ad arrivare al cuore delle persone con le sue parole e la sua musica. Nel corso dell’anno le sue canzoni sono apparse in numerosissimi film, programmi TV e videogiochi.
